A-RECORDS (The Netherlands) AL73134 - SANDY CRESSMAN - Homenagem Brasileira Sandy Cressman - vocals Marcos Silva - keyboard Celso Alberti - drums David Belove - bass Harvey Wainapel - saxophone / clarinetist Special Guests: Carlos Oliveira - guitar Jeff Cressman - trombone Marquinhos Brasil - percussion Once in a while, an artist is born with an inexplicable connection to a culture far from the artist's origins. Such is the case with vocalist Sandy Cressman. Born in New York City of American parents, but with a Brazilian heart, Cressman began her recording career in 1984 with the highly acclaimed vocal trio Pastiche, in which she continues to perform with till this day.

In 1992, Sandy began her solo career in parallel with her trio, performing a mixture of jazz, Brazilian and her original songs. Sandy went on to record with such varied musicians as Ray Obiedo, Pete Escovedo and Eddie Money. Her love of languages and world music have led her to become a much-in-demand session vocalist for artists such as Orquesta Candela (Salsa in Spanish), Rebeca Mauleon (Cuban Jazz, in Spanish and Yoruba), Price Ayo (Nigerian pop in Yoruba), and Jai Uttal (Indian fusion in Hindu and Sanskrit).

But Sandy's strongest affinity is for the music and culture of Brazil. Keyboardist Marcos Silva, formerly musical director for Flora Purim and Airto, and has two CD's out on Concord Records, "White and Black" and "Here We Go". Marcos has also worked with Toninho Horta, Bud Shank, Paquito d'Rivera and Ricardo Silveira. Drummer Celso Alberti has played and recorded with numerous jazz and Brazilian artists including Flora Purim and Airto, Jose Neto, Herbie Mann, Madeline Eastman and Terra Sul. Bassist David Belove is the Bay Area's most prominent Latin and Brazilian bass player, and has worked with Pete and Sheila Escovedo, Tito Puente, the Machete Ensemble, Claudia Gomez as well as jazz artists Joe Henderson, Max Roach and Dizzy Gillespie. Saxophonist Harvey Wainapel recently released his critically acclaimed CD (AL73061 Ambrosia: The Music of Kenny Barron) on A-Records as well. He is a well-known artist on the European festival circuit and has worked with such notables as McCoy Tyner, Joe Henderson, Ray Charles and more.

Homenagem Brasileira (Homage to Brazil) is a musical journey through the rich world of the great composers and artists of Brazilian jazz, including compositions by Ivan Lins, Dori Caymmi, Milton Nascimento, Jobim, Gilberto Gil, Djavan and others. This recording also pays homage to great vocalists such as Nana Caymmi and Elis Regina and arranger César Camargo Mariano. The CD celebrates the many styles and colors of Brazilian jazz—from bossa nova to samba and partido alto. Most importantly, the music speaks with passion, emotion and saudade.
