Einstein Was
Trash Too

I am amazed at the lack of criterion and even the disrespect that Brazzil, a magazine that until now I classified as good, has shown by publishing the article by Janer Cristaldo ("The Sting, The Adventures of a Brazilian Cheat," October 1997). First, a translator should stick to translation instead of expressing his strange thoughts on anthropology. Second, it is unethical to publish out-of-context fragments and then criticize someone based on them. And last, this gentleman is trying to discredit the work of the greatest Brazilian anthropologist of all times by criticizing his personal life. You might also call Freud and Einstein human trash although they were geniuses. I can't say that I was shocked, but I certainly felt dirty reading it.

Well Done

I wanted to thank Janer Cristaldo for his great article on Darcy Ribeiro. Well written and better thought.

No More

I received your October issue today. It is the first issue we have received. Our family was shocked by the sexually explicit pictures, especially the one on page 15. Please do not send our family ANY more issues if this type of pictures are going to appear again. Just keep my $3. I am sorry I agreed to this. I just did not know what to expect.

Taking Notes

I stumbled upon Brazzil a couple of months ago in the New York Public Library. The copy in question was the April 1997 issue. A number of articles and items were so interesting to me that I took notes and saved the notes. I have—going back to when I was a kid ( I was born in 1950)—always been interested in foreign countries.

You printed song lyrics in Portuguese and in English. There were movie reviews: Corisco e Dadá, Crede-Mi, Pequeno Dicionário Amoroso. There was an article by Émerson Luís about learning disabilities in the Brazilian school system. I have a writing background. I've written about movies and television, so I was definitely interested in anything having to do with filmmaking in Brazil.

Helping Hand

First of all , congratulations for a good job as a bridge between us in Brazil and our brothers and friends in the U.S.. As a reader of Brazzil I always appreciate the magazine and just for that I am interested in helping as a volunteer. I´m a 20-year-old economy student at Unicamp ( University of Campinas) and have a lot of interest in music, culture, art, politics and economy.

School Material

We'd like to reprint part of Émerson Luís's article, "Learning Disabilities," (April 1997) for our Brazil Reader, which we are putting together aimed at undergraduate students. May we have your permission? We will cite Brazzil fully.

Anyone?

We greatly enjoy your magazine and look forward to every issue. My husband and I really miss Brazil, and it is so nice to hear Brazilian news, gossip and stories on a regular basis. Thank you and "parabéns!" My (Brazilian) husband and I have been living in Oregon. We greatly miss the fun we used to have dancing lambada and samba in the wonderful Brazilian clubs in London (where we met, and both used to live). We are both looking for Brazilian contacts here in the U.S.—to organize Brazilian events and to stave off loneliness! If anyone is interested in corresponding with us (in Portuguese or English) please e-mail us at: kathleenstraub@juno.com or: valterdasilva@juno.com

Church Comfort

First and foremost, I would like to congratulate the staff of Brazzil magazine for the outstanding job. It is very important for those who are so far away from Brazil to have, at a very affordable price, great articles in a diversity of subjects, keeping us well informed about everything that concerns Brazil. It was very refreshing to read the beautiful article about religion in your September issue, especially, in a time when materialism is replacing spiritualism.

In my recent trip to the city of Sao Paulo, I had the opportunity to witness how Brazilians are finding comfort and shelter in the Higher Power. I would like to take the chance to mention the wonderful job Father Pedro Sbalchiero Neto of the Church Nossa Senhora da Salette is doing. In less than five years, he turned a small church in a big worship place where there is something for everybody. I strongly urge all readers to take a minute and visit their web site at: http://www.nsrasalette.org.br

SOS from Brazil

I am a student of communications in Brazil. I saw some information on your WEB site and I think that you can help me. As I'm working on a film production, I am looking for material related to the discovery of Brazil.. Here in São Paulo is so difficult to find it. If you have some maps, paintings or anything about the Brazil colonization, please, contact me at julianalopes@hotmail.com.

Wow, thanks!

This is just a quick note to tell you how much I enjoy reading Brazzil. Over the past 25 years I have had the pleasure of becoming friends with several Brazilians. One is my closest friend and we've visited each other several times. In order for me to stay in touch with my friends I rely on resources such as yours. You are wonderful. While I'm American, I think my soul is Brazilian.

No Portuguese,
Sorry

I was just reading some of your articles on the Net. I was so amazed with the amount of great information you have on it that I decided that I cannot live without it anymore. What do I have to do to subscribe? Do you have issues in Portuguese as well? I am dying to hear more about my country.

Job Hunter

Iam a teacher in Maryland, and my student from Rio gave me a copy of your excellent magazine! I rushed to get a subscription and I love every issue! My mother's family is from beautiful Bahia, and hopefully I will be teaching there this summer. If any readers know about jobs in Bahia, or Rio, feel free to e-mail me.
